It's easy to make your own hummus and it's great to know exactly what it contains.... beans, seeds, lemon juice and spices.

1 cup cooked or low sodium canned garbanzo beans
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup unhulled sesame seeds
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Dr. Fuhrman's VegiZest or other no salt seasoning blend, adjusted to taste
1 teaspoon coconut aminos
1 teaspoon horseradish
1 small clove garlic, chopped


Blend all ingredients in a high powered blender until creamy smooth.

Serve with raw and lightly steamed vegetables or as a filling ingredient with a whole grain wrap or pita.

Yields: 1 1/2 cups.

Thank you thank you thank you...this is my second week on ETL and I was really missing oils and dressings. I made this tonight and dipped carrots and broccoli...I was in heaven. I may have gone a little overboard with the garlic but the flavor was fabulous and just a few tablespoons full gave me a feeling of sweet indulgence!

This is a great substitute for mayo. I would add a little more horseradish next time. I put it in a whole wheat pita with lettuce and tomato, cucumber or avocado. Very good.

Awesome!! First I tried it with Garlic Powder in place of garlic and used Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb in place of Vegi-Zest and minus the horseradish. It was very good.

Second time I used real garlic and Vegi-Zest but minus the horseradish and it was even better!! I can't find horseradish without junk in it but I would like to try it with horseradish someday.

Delicious, filling and easy to make. I added more bean water. i mght add alittle more horse radish next time. i had it with raw veggies. Very satisfying.

Fantastic dip. For us it really is a base dip and we find it so versatile. We can add scallions, or roasted red pepper, maybe a little chili powder, or even avocado and onion! Too many flavors, not enough time to try them all!

I was very leery about trying hummus. I'd never had it before and I'm not a huge fan of beans (but I am working to overcome that now that I'm on ETL!!), but this stuff is delicious! I love it in whole wheat pitas.

Very tasty. I added some cumin because I couldn't find horseradish, and that worked well.

Excellent, and I am picky! I used tahini instead of sesame seeds because I had it on hand. Liked it even better that way.

I am surprised! I like it! I used 2 T of tahini instead of the seeds and it came out great. (didn't use the VegiZest or horseradish). Love it with carrots! I think I'm going to bring this to a pot luck with carrots and celery to dip! yummy!

Where can you find plain horseradish? Also, is there any nutritional difference between tahini and sesame seeds?

Yum! Like mrsevaro we used 2 tbsp of tahini instead of the sesame seeds. We also used Costco's organic no-salt seasoning instead of vegizest. The horseradish gives it a really nice bite. I think 1/2 tsp of cumin would be a nice addition, too.

Really creamy! I like my hummus a bit more tangy, so I would probably add a tbsp of lemon juice next time and added more garlic! Love this recipe!

I didn't realize until after I had blended everything that I have unhulled sesame seeds. It lead to a very sesame flavor! I doubled everything else and then it came into balance. Great base recipe! I didn't have any horseradish and used some spicy pepper instead. Delicious and so healthy! Thanks for the great recipe! I can finally get myself off of the prepackaged hummus!!!

first time I ever had horse radish! Interesting taste. I added minced garlic from a jar as I find the regular garlic too strong. also a tablespoon of full seed mustard. I didn't have any soy so splashed some liquid from the caper jar. also included some lemon jest.

LOVE THIS STUFF!! I have always loved hummus but I really like making my own. This is a great recipe that you can adjust to many different flavors like bbailey99 said. I also added more lemon juice like valuliana. Reading everyone's comments really helps when I make a recipe myself. This recipe is great! Thank you

I love this hummus, it's my favorite! If I use low sodium canned beans I omit the braggs. Also, I use the whole can and add a tad bit more water and it works out great. And I use Mrs. Dash Original instead of veggie zest because it gives it more flavor. I use half the amount of tahini instead of sesame seeds unless I don't have tahini in the fridge. I don't use the horse radish, but I do add extra garlic. What a great recipe!
