Joanna's Story

Her breast cancer diagnosis made Joanna realize she needed to stop her yo-yo dieting and change her eating habits; she lost 32 pounds and is a Nutritarian for life

I was diagnosed with Stage 1 IDC breast cancer on February 22, 2019. Petrified is NOT the word! I'm a single mom for goodness sake, this can't be happening was all I could say and think.  My mother is a two- timer (once with Triple Negative in 2003, and then diagnosed in September 2018 with ER/PR+/HER2 negative like me).  Plus. I have chronic basal cell carcinoma; I just had my 10th removed in July 2019. In addition, I struggled with binge eating/anorexia/food obsession my whole life.  For years I struggled with it, yo-yo dieting, gaining and losing the same 20 - 40 pounds depending on what year it was.  So, my cancer diagnosis really shook me to the core and I knew it was time to take action.  I had a lumpectomy in April 2019 with intraoperative radiation. On May 14th it was time for my first oncology appointment.  In walks my surgeon, not my oncologist saying "I need to tell you something." Yeah, I panicked! It was good news/bad news.  Good news, he got all my Stage 1 cancer and was so small that he called it "cancer lite."  Bad news, I had an extensive amount of Stage 0 cancer, both DCIS and LCIS which he excavated, and after finished with surgery removed approximately two inches worth of cancer!  YIKES!  I'm only 51! Hello!  He made mention that I would have to take Tamoxifen (20mg 1x daily, and I'm still confused about what this is actually helping my body do.  Is it even helping?)  Thankfully, I didn't need chemo. That very night I went home and researched everything I could about breast cancer, and as I studied it became clear that a lifestyle change was in order.  Yo-yo dieting was not helping and likely contributing to the problem. Meat/dairy came up as major cancer culprits. Then I came across Dr. Fuhrman on the internet and I never looked back.   May15th I became a Nutritarian for life, in order to live a good life. My salad is my main meal, I have my G-BOMBS every day. When I tell you, I look and feel better than I have in years, I'm not lying, I even gave away 32 pounds which I'm so excited about, not because my pants fit, but because cancer loves fat and I'm no longer heavy.  My food cravings and obsessions are gone, my blood work is nearly perfect (a little anemic but I am supplementing with B12 and Vitamin D).  I sleep better, and have stopped needing to chew Tums all the time. Even my sinuses are better. Everyone in my  house very open to this new way of living which has helped. Dr. Fuhrman and the Nutritarian way of living have been a Godsend.  Thank you Dr. Fuhrman.
