Split Pea Irish Stew

Put this hearty stew on your St. Patrick’s Day menu. The cabbage, root vegetables and pickling spice provide all the right flavors.

Ingredients

6 cups water
1 cup dry green split peas
2 cups chopped turnips
3 medium onions, coarsely chopped
3 medium carrots, coarsely chopped
3 celery ribs, coarsely chopped
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Dr. Fuhrman's VegiZest or other no-salt seasoning, adjusted to taste
1/8 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
2 teaspoons coconut aminos
2 tablespoons pickling spice (see note)
1 medium green cabbage, cut into small wedges

Instructions:

Place all ingredients, except pickling spice and cabbage, in a large soup pot. Place pickling spice on a piece of cheesecloth (or in a tea bag that has been emptied) and tie tightly with string. Add cheesecloth bag to ingredients in pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove spice bag and discard. Add cabbage and continue to simmer partially covered, for an additional 20 minutes or until cabbage and split peas are tender, stirring occasionally.

Note: Pickling spice without added sulfites can be found in health food stores or ordered on line. You can also make your own: combine 2 dried crushed bay leaves, 2 whole cloves, 1 tablespoon mustard seeds, 1 tablespoon whole coriander seeds, 1/2 tablespoon peppercorns, 1 teaspoon whole allspice, 1 teaspoon dill seeds, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes and 1/2 cinnamon stick, broken in pieces,

This is absolutely delicious. Didn't have the pickling spices, which are similar to the spices one would use in a New England Boiled Dinner (corned beef and cabbage). I will make this dish all year 'round.

This is a great recipe; it looks simple and ordinary but has surprisingly great flavor. My kids even love it. This is my 4th year making it. (The pickling spices are worth finding). I'm not sure how to adjust the rating, so I'll say it here - 5 stars!

I really like this recipe. I bought a metal teaball to put the pickling spices in. (I'm checking with Dr. F on this but I think it is safe.)

A little bland for my family, but I like it. Leftovers are good too. I didn't add any pickling spices.

This was simple and very tasty. A nice change from some of the other dishes I've been having. The only thing I'm not sure I did right, was in using the dried green peas, are you supposed to soak them before using them in the recipe? I didn't and the peas were rather hard. I think I would prefer them softer. Still, a very tasty dish and will become a staple at my house.

Good recipe, poor instructions. No mention of adding water and the peas need to be soaked or pre-cooked before adding the remainder. Also, the terms 'simmer' and 'simmer uncovered' are used. I wasn't sure if to cover or not when simmer was used... (I did cover though) rookie cook, TH

I really enjoyed this stew. It made a lot so I had plenty of left over's for lunch. A quick way to soften the split peas is to bring the place the peas in half the water called for then bring to a boil. Turn off the heat and let cool. They are soft and ready to use by adding the remaining ingredients. If you don't like the pickling spice, don't bother making it. That's where the flavor comes from. This was a great replacement for the corned beef brisket I used to make to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and I liked it even better!

I found the flavor quite subtle but still good. I couldn't find any pickling spices so I made my own off an Internet recipe. I was pleasantly surprised to find I already had all the spices on hand. I added a bit of smoked chipotle to give it a mild spice and it goes really well! I also pre-soaked the green peas and made sure to cook the stew til they were mushy.

Very tasty. Needed a little zip, so added some red pepper flakes to it.
I did not have any pickling spice but found several recipes for making your own by Googling it.
I would cook the peas with the onion and garlic for and hour and then add the other vegetables for the last 30 to 40 minutes so they don't overcook.

This was one of the most surprising nutritarian recipes I have made.  The amount of flavor produced with such simple ingredients really surprised me.  I used parsnips instead of turnips and that added a sweetness.  I made the bag of spices from scratch and it was worth it. Can't wait to have leftovers tomorrow.

Great recipe, just in time for St Patrick's Day!  We had to go shopping for the pickling spice, turnips, and cabbage; we had everything else on hand.  I followed the recipe exactly and totally loved this stew!

11/29/23: we've made this recipe several more times.  For more flavor I add two tsp of black pepper, and two TBLS of Vegezest.

My plan was to make this exactly as the recipe states so I could give an accurate rating, however, I forgot I did not have potatoes or turnips. So I had to substitute and used rutabaga and a  sweet potato instead. The result was still very good and I will be making it again. I usually pre-soak the split peas but didn’t and they were not soft.  I took some out to add meat to for my husband. He liked it as well. I can’t get the rating to work but I give it 5 stars.

Great taste. I washed the beans so the broth was thicker and the peas less promimant than in the picture. I left the spice pack in all the time the soup was cooking.
