IvyGene®: Non-invasive Cancer Testing

Every day, thousands of people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. Conventional detection modalities such as mammograms and PSA testing are inadequate because most cancers are discovered too late, when treatments have little effect on lifespan. Nutritional therapy can have dramatic effects to enhance lifespan in those diagnosed with cancer, but its benefits and even the potential to completely reverse cancer is enhanced in the early stages of cancer.

Dr. Fuhrman Wellness Center is pleased to now be offering a non-invasive early detection test. IvyGene® is a blood test able to identify the presence of malignant cancer and quantify cancer presence. IvyGene® is a liquid biopsy that identifies the presence of cancer with a blood test. A highly accurate and sensitive test, the IvyGene® test is an important tool to aid physicians in identifying the presence of malignancy.

Liquid biopsies are an innovation that allows for the non-invasive detection of markers of the presence of cancers, in this case relying on genetic material shed from cancerous cells into the circulation. Liquid biopsies were named one of the top 10 emerging technologies of 2017 by Scientific American.

Who should have this test?

This non-invasive and highly accurate test can be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests to confirm results; it may also be used when the diagnosis of cancer is uncertain. It can also be used for early diagnosis by anyone who is at high risk of developing cancer and also for tracking progress during or after treatment for cancer, or monitoring for recurrence. Data from IvyGene® labs reports that the sensitivity (rate of true positives) of the test is 93% and specificity (rate of true negatives) is 87%.

How Does IvyGene Work?

IvyGene® utilizes ctDNA (circulating tumor DNA) methylation patterns in order to identify the presence of malignancy. Methylation occurs when a methyl group (-CH3) is bonded to a cytosine nucleotide in DNA. Methylation of DNA at a particular site is a modification that affects the expression of the gene. Methylation patterns that are characteristic of cancerous cells have been established, and by identifying ctDNA methylation patterns, scientists can compare individual methylation patterns against a those methylation patterns consistent with cancer presence.

Because DNA from normal cells and cancerous cells is shed into the circulation, this cell-free DNA can be analyzed in blood. The Ivygene® test determines what percentage of cell-free DNA has the methylation patterns indicative of cancer. A result of 20 percent or greater is considered a positive test for cancer. A greater percentage is considered a higher risk of a clinically significant cancer. The percentage provides a tool for monitoring cancer treatments, testing for recurrence, or monitoring patients with a high risk of cancer, as increases and decreases in the percentage can be measured over time with repeated tests.

Unlike many genetic tests that investigate the DNA sequence itself to determine the propensity or possibility of developing cancer over time, the IvyGene® test identifies DNA methylation patterns found in cancerous, but not normal cells. Since IvyGene® measures methylation patterns that are not present in normal cells, it provides a test of actual disease presence, as opposed to a likelihood of disease.

Early detection of cancers allows for early and aggressive nutritional intervention, aiming to reverse, slow or prevent further growth of the cancer.  A positive IvyGene® test may provide the incentive to make a radical change to a healthful diet and potentially save many life-years.

Results are usually obtained in 5 business days

Health Screening Triad

A Health Screening Triad provides you with insights into your current health status and measurable results that can serve as a benchmark from which to track your progress. This information is far beyond what a body weight scale can give you. The screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, and there is no need to disrobe, other than momentarily removing your shoes and socks. You will receive your results at the end of the Health Screening Triad, as well as a copy of Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutritarian Handbook and other reading materials.

The Health Screening Triad consists of:

  • A comprehensive body composition analysis. Weight alone is not enough to determine the state of one’s health and potential for disease. State-of-the-art technology is used to accurately measure body fat percentage, amount of visceral fat, muscle mass and distribution, body water balance, total body weight, and body mass index (BMI). Your body fat percentage is more accurate than BMI or weight measurements alone, and is a more efficient way of assessing whether you have reached your ideal weight, and how much more weight you need to lose.
  • Skin antioxidant (carotenoid) score. This noninvasive biophotonic hand scanner measures overall carotenoid antioxidant activity within minutes. We have seen that a higher score is associated with better health outcomes. These results can be improved over time, as you eat more micronutrient-dense foods on a regular basis.
  • Blood pressure reading. It’s not normal to develop high blood pressure with aging, and it is important to reverse it with nutritional excellence, not cover it up with medications. In most cases, a normal blood pressure can be achieved and medications discontinued.

The Health Screening Triad can be performed during a Consultation with a Physician, is included as part of an initial Nutrition Coaching session or can be scheduled on its own.

Cardiovascular Screening

The Cardiovascular Screening provides an IMT (intima-media thickness) scan  to evaluate cardiovascular health. This unique test quickly provides an accurate method for predicting the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Measuring your IMT is a useful way of screening for arterial disease using ultrasound technology, and is especially useful for monitoring changes. It is primarily recommended for those who are at a higher risk of having plaque on their arteries (people who are overweight or have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol), but this test can be utilized by anyone. It is used for its ability to generally assess arterial health and plaque burden in your body. It is noninvasive, and causes no pain or discomfort. It is especially useful to monitor your IMT score every 1-2 years to determine if your condition is improving or worsening over time.

The Cardiovascular Screening is offered every other month, typically on the second Wednesday of that month, and an appointment must be scheduled in advance to receive the screening.

Home Health Screening Tests

These convenient home screening tests may be used to confirm adequate levels of essential nutrients in the blood or test other health parameters without doctor visits or blood draws.

  • Fatty Acid Analysis Blood Test with EPA and DHA levels and omega-3 index. Many studies have shown that people with higher (vs. lower) omega-3 index levels are at decreased risk for a variety of diseases. These include heart disease, stroke, dementia, and depression to name a few. Studies on vegans demonstrate the majority have unfavorably low levels.
  • Home Vitamin D Test allows you to test your vitamin D levels at home with a simple finger stick. Though insufficiency is ubiquitous in North America, levels too high or too low can be harmful.
  • QuickVueiFOB Test Kit is extremely accurate and sensitive at detecting blood in the stool

Tests may be purchased from this website, self-administered in the comfort of your home, then mailed to the appropriate location for processing. Results will be sent to Dr. Fuhrman Medical Associates and then mailed to you.

EPA=eicosapentaenoic acid. DHA=docosahexaenoic acid.
