“Our Nutritarian journey started when I watched the film Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and was immediately inspired. I started juicing exclusively that same day with my husband Tom. He had hypertension and high cholesterol and was taking hypertension medication. His doctor wanted him to go on a cholesterol lowering drug. We decided it first made more sense to try diet modification.

During the week we were juicing I thought about what we were going to eat when we stopped juicing and looked up Dr. Fuhrman.  I read Eat To Live and decided we would follow it. Then I read Disease Proof Your Child and quickly realized we needed to stop juicing and start cooking following the Eat To Live plan as a family. Until then, since my husband and I were juicing and not cooking, we were letting our seven year old daughter eat whatever she wanted every night which was usually mac and cheese. We started making the recipes in Dr. Fuhrman's books and learning more via his website. We find the website very helpful in answering all the questions that come up on our own as well as from family and friends. The most amazing part of all of this for me is the freedom from food addiction that I feel for the first time in my life that I can remember. I literally ate a large bowl of ice cream most nights since I was about four years old. The nights that I didn't eat ice cream I would miss it.  Resisting ice cream seemed impossible. 

Since following Eat To Live I no longer crave or even care about ice cream. I can be in a room filled with people eating ice cream and have no desire for it. I am still amazed, but absolutely thrilled by this, my new reality. This summer we were at the shore walking on the boardwalk, I thought I’d want some soft ice cream since I had been "so good." But when the time came and others were ordering it, I actually thought, "no, I'm not hungry and I don't actually want any."  What an awesome feeling!

I lost ninety five pounds and my husband lost ninety pounds. I went from a size 28 to a 16. My husband went from size 46 waist to 38. My husband went off his anti-hypertensive medication within two months and his cholesterol went down from 206 (Feb 2012) to 167 (Aug 2012). His triglycerides went down from 167 to 131. And his LDL went from 134 to 104. We feel great and love our new lifestyle. We're excited we can fit in theater seats comfortably and are planning to go more often. Our daughter is learning about eating for health and enjoys helping us plan and cook meals. She loves Fuhrman Fudgsicles. Thank you so much Dr. Fuhrman for giving us the information and tools we needed to be successful.


Updated Information as of Jun 21, 2013:

We are continuing to enjoy and benefit from our Nutritarian lifestyle.  I've lost 130 lbs  and Tom has lost 110 lbs. I'm a size 14 and Tom's waist is down to a 36. Tom's total cholesterol is down to 150; triglycerides down to 83; and his LDL is down to 94 (May 2013). His latest blood pressure was 112/60 without meds now for the past year. I haven't had any labs drawn lately, but will be going for a physical in July so I can give more of an update then. My biggest excitement lately was in May when I had to travel on an airplane for the first time since losing weight. I was excited to see how much I had to tighten the seat belt when before I sometimes needed a seatbelt extender! Our whole family is more active now and we get out and walk and exercise at our local park most nights after dinner. We started a local Nutritarian group and are having fun meeting other like minded Nutritarians.
