1/2 cup brown rice
1 1/2 cups raw sunflower seeds
1/4 medium onion
1/4 carrot
1/4 medium yellow squash
1/2 organic celery stalk
1/4 medium zucchini
1/2 cup red cabbage
1 clove garlic, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons Spike
1/2 tablespoon Dr. Fuhrman's VegiZest or other no salt seasoning
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon basil
2 teaspoons water


Cook rice according to package directions.

Process sunflower seeds in a food processor until very fine.

Add ground sunflower seeds to the cooked brown rice.

Shred the vegetables in food processor and saute, along with minced garlic, in 3 tablespoons of water for 5 minutes.

Add vegetables to the rice/nut mixture and then add the rest of the ingredients. Mix thoroughly then pat firmly into 6 patties.

Fry briefly in a lightly oiled pan or bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes on each side.

If desired, these may be done on a grill, turning carefully with a metal spatula.

Note: These may be served as is or on a whole grain bun with a slice of onion, sliced tomato, lettuce, and a little ketchup.

I made this burger and it is very good. It did not hold together well so I put it in a Pita Pocket. I would like to make it again to see if I can get it to hold together better. I think it is something my non-ETLers would like, especially if I could get to work on a bun

I had the same problem. It wouldn't stay together. It all fell apart. I sauted the 1st 2 and they all fell apart in the pan. Then I tried baking it thinking it would hold together if I didn't have to turn it. But it did the same thing.
Would the author of this recipe give us assitance on what to do or what they might think went wrong.

We love these burgers. I put the mix in the refrigerator over night and it holds together really well to form nice round patties the next day... we bake them at 450 until barely brown then reheat them in the toaster oven throughout the week.

Yum! The burgers stuck together well for me, maybe because I ground the seeds/nuts (I used half sunflower seeds, half walnuts) in the Vita Mix. We ate it on Ezekiel buns, with baked sliced sweet onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and ketchup.

you may also try adding some flax seed, (grind it)(2Tb with 1/3 cup water will congeal like an egg and act as a binder .

I refrigerated them overnight as per abixby's suggestion. They weren't the greatest by themselves but were terrific on a while wheat bun with some dijon mustard. :)
