Ingredients

1 ripe avocado, peeled, pit removed
1/2 to 3/4 cups water (start with a 1/2 cup and add more if needed to blend)
4 tablespoons natural non-alkalized cocoa powder
6-8 regular dates or 3-4 Medjool dates, pitted (depending on size and sweetness)
dash alcohol-free vanilla extract or pure vanilla bean powder

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients in a high-powered blender.

May be served by itself or used as a topping for fresh fruit.

This was decadent and very easy to make. I used 6 dates and it was still very sweet. Next time I'm going to put in a second avocado because it was too much chocolate for me.

I tried the recipe as written and didn't like it very much. All I could taste was the cocoa powder. I added some cashews and frozen blueberries and it was very good, creamier and a more consistent uniform texture.

I thought this was just okay. Would have rated it a 3-star myself, however both my kids ate it! My 5-year-old and my picky 3-year-old were fighting over it.

I followed the recipe and found the cocoa overwhelming as others had said. Maybe less cocoa next time.

Edit: This was so much better the next day thoroughly chilled. Still a little too much cocoa, but very similar to SAD pudding.

I need to satisfy my sweet tooth and this does the job! It is definitely better chilled. I enjoy it plain or as a dip for fresh fruit.

Awesome! Just made it a second time, and since I make it in my blender, I placed the water (3/4 cup) and dates (6) in first, blended until smooth, added the avocado, blended and finally the vanilla (1/2 tsp.) and cocoa (3 tablespoons). Tastes just like chocolate mousse, and I don't even care for avocados!

I was very skeptical about this recipe, but very impressed! I added raspberries and a small handful of cashews. I also replaced some of the water with plain soy milk, and would probably use plain almond milk for all the water and skip the cashews next time. 4.5 stars.

Very rich! I was a little turned off at the idea of avocado in my pudding (though I do love avocados in general) but it lends an incredible texture without really a noticeable flavor. We had medjool dates so used 5 and it was a perfect amount of sweetness.

I love chocolate but have never liked chocolate pudding - they always tasted 'chemically' not 'chocolaty' to me. BUT this pudding is perfect! I've also served it as a dip for fresh fruit (strawberries, banana, kiwi etc) took it to a party. It was the first thing gone!

Rich and chocolaty, creamy and delicious. I made with unsweetened coconut milk instead of water. Will try add-ins like banana or orange juice or berries. My husband loved it & said "I thought you weren't eating this kind of food anymore". He won't go near avocados with a 10 foot pole. My little secret teehee :-)

One word, awesome! It's been so long since I've had pudding because even the vegan pudding is so over processed and not good for you. So good, just wish avocados were a little cheaper. 2nd time made it with maple syrup and it was super good too

I make it with almond milk instead of water and we love it. Took it to family members and didn't tell them what is was; they were shocked that it was mostly avocado and loved it. My aunt wanted to keep it. We all felt it was more like chocolate mouse.

This was very yummy! I had my family guess what was in it and they couldn't find out what the creamy ingredient was! I might reduce the cocoa powder to 3 tablespoons next time, but it was great as it. Another great recipe!

This recipe is SOOO delicious! I'm thinking of putting it into an Oat Pie crust for a Thanksgiving pudding pie! Maybe add some toasted pecans and coconut...

Absolutely shocking how wonderful this is! I made it today with my 5 year old boy, you should have seen the joy on his face when he tasted it for the first time from the beater! Now THIS is what they should label as "Kid Tested, Mother Approved!" LOL I added an extra tablespoon of cocoa and a two drops of almond extract to really make it shine. Fantastic! We love this one, as well as many of the other chocolate puddings here (including one I submitted!) I added 1/2 of a frozen banana for a bit more creaminess, which I think has to do with my blending tools. I want to try doubling it to make a holiday pie, ans bowjack mentioned above. It is also good served in cups with one of the nut cream toppings garnished with a black cherry or other berries. Guests (and grandchildren) are always amazed to learn it contains avocado.

Just made this and it is DELICIOUS!!! Based on some of the feedback I only put 3T of cocoa powder in. I ended up tripling the recipe because it was so yummy and needed more cocoa in the end. I can't wait to give this to my kids after school! ;)

More like a mousse than a pudding if you use all the chocolate called for. I added a banana to ease up on the chocolate and it works very well to me. Hard to find alcohol free extract but what difference does that small amount make anyway???

Terrific recipe...definitely 5 stars....More like a mousse than a pudding....I used a high quality, sulphur-free chocolate from S.A. and used half of what the recipe asked for. It still tasted like too much chocolate for my liking. I loved the rich taste and smooth, creamy consistency. Too rich for me to serve as a mousse or a pudding, but I REALLY liked it by putting a small dollop on a compote of fresh raspberries and/or strawberries - both tasted good. I will make this again using less chocolate.

I just made this, being 6 weeks without dessert. Wow, it was extremely rich, smooth and sweet! Hard to believe this is nutritarian. One would never know. Now I know what dessert to make to bring to an upcoming party! I think next time I would like to try to use a little less chocolate and one less date just to see if that makes it a little less sweet and strong chocolate tasting but I know many love it this way.

I suppose adding the almond milk/nuts/berries/banana will change the overall calories and one would have to consider this if weight loss is an objective.

I have served this with sliced bananas at two dinner parties, and I get nothing but raves!! One guy was shocked to learn that it was avocados because he said he hates avocados!! Great recipe!!

I would give this 4 stars (I tried to rate it but I can't figure out how to do that as it won't let me). I had to add a lot more liquid than asked for, which was not a problem. I used my VitaMix and subbed in soy milk for water. It came out really creamy like traditional chocolate pudding. It did seem to be missing some depth of flavor, however. I recently tried the "Chocolate Hummus" recipe on this website and the flavors seemed more traditional for chocolate pudding, however it wasn't as smooth and creamy. I do believe I have tricked my family into eating avocado when some of them don't like avocado!

I also used almond milk, less dates and 3T of cocoa. Definitely a keeper. The consistency and flavor is sooo chocolate pudding. Serving size is small but enough. 5*

Oh my goodness! I also substituted unsweetened vanilla almond milk for the water. Made this and put in a dessert dish. Sliced organic strawberries on top and placed in freezer for about 10 minutes to chill. It was amazing!

This is legit dark "chocolate pudding". You can't taste a BIT of avocado. If you are worried it's too cocoa-y just use less and keep tasting and dding as you go. I found the balance perfect. Option to lighten up would be to add a bit of creamy cashew cream HOMEMADE WITHOUT LUMPS (you have to soak the cashews first overnight)...not something from a jar or you can try as someone else did - replace the water with a nut milk.

Update: I just made this with the 3/4 cup liquid but used almond milk,  the same amount of dates, a cap of vanilla extract,  but only 1.5 T of  the cocoa and only a half avocado and it was good.. More of a milk chocolate not dark. And I don't ever eat avocados. 

Try different combos especially if you have the little Veggie Bullet cup blender it's so easy and that thing really pulverizes the ingredients. Much easier to adjust and clean better than the Vitamix or a food processor.

I've loved chocolate pudding since I was a little girl but gave it up long ago.  Tried this today using 1.5 mini avocados, 4 medjool dates, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, and 1/8 tsp vanilla, to make 3 servings.  There were a few date bits that didn't get blended but I actually thought they added a nice touch.  Delicious!!!
