Even though detection and treatment methods have advanced, the percentage of women dying from breast cancer has not changed much over the last 30 years. Instead of urging women to prevent breast cancer by avoiding its causes, various groups have led women, through fear, to think that mammograms are their best and only option for survival. I’m here to tell you it is not. Empowerment, not fear, should be driving your decisions whenever your health is at risk. Understand that the best chance of survival is within your control.

First and foremost, you need to distinguish between prevention and detection. Mammograms are a poor screening tool as they commonly lead to false positives that cause unnecessary anxiety and further procedures, including needless surgery.

Mammograms detect cancer after it has occurred, they do not prevent cancer from happening in the first place. In addition, women need to recognize the misleading publicity and hype that exaggerates the value of mammograms and most importantly, women need to know about the proven dietary and lifestyle modifications that can prevent cells from becoming cancerous in the first place, and that even can increase survival if breast cancer has already been detected.

Women must be given accurate information about the potential risks and benefits of mammography in order to make an informed decision.
