Beware: Sunscreens with a high SPF may not be protective & may be hazardous to your health!

While UV–B rays cause sunburn, UV–A rays penetrate deeper into the skin, lowering our resistance to skin cancers and causing skin to age. The SPF number or sun protection factor on sunscreens refers only to UV–B protection. Many sunscreens do not protect against UV–A rays. To effectively block UV–A rays you need a physical sunblock such as Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. As a result, many sun care products now use Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide but there is more to the story. Serious concerns have been raised about the safety of these ingredients used in most commercially available sunscreen products.

Often these sun care products use a form of Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide which is micronized by nanotechnology. This technology is used to make the sunscreen more transparent – so it is more absorbed by the skin. These tiny nanoparticles, however, can theoretically cross biological membranes and easily reach cells. Nanoparticles are smaller than anything humans have put into commercial products before.

These ultra small particles may even enter the bloodstream. Lab studies indicate that both of these nano-ingredients create free radicals that damage the DNA of cells and possibly cause other harm as well. Preliminary investigation into the ability of these nanoparticles to penetrate healthy skin has revealed conflicting results.

Public interest groups are currently asking the FDA to declare all currently available sunscreen products with nanoparticles a potential hazard to public health. Until complete safety-assessments are made, I recommend steering clear of products with these nanoparticles.

Most products, however, do not reveal the use of nanoparticles on their label. To make matters worse, there also are other ingredients found in sunscreen products that should be avoided such as: PABA, Benzophenone (homosalate and octy-methoxycinnamate), Parabens (butyl-,ethyl-,methyl-, propyl-), Padimate-O and Parsol 1789 (2-ethylhexyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoic acid and avobenzone). So what is safe? We’ve done our research and found a product-line which uses a form of nonmicronized titanium dioxide that is safe and effective at blocking both UV-A and UV-B rays plus it has none of those harmful chemicals.

After starting the Eat to Live program, I gained a lot of hope and guidance from reading the success stories and postings in Dr. Fuhrman’s online member forum, so I thought that I would submit my own experience to help others too.

Although I had a number of minor problems that likely would develop into bigger problems later, the most vexing health issue I was dealing with were migraine headaches. I had borderline blood pressure, bad allergies and was moderately overweight. One thing I had never done well in my life was eating the right things. I knew this, but I failed to realize what a correlation this had with my overall health.

Things got worse about a year and a half ago. After doing a lot of travel on business the year before and eating most dinners out (lots of meat and dessert), I gained about 25lbs. over and above the 15 lbs., which I was already overweight. At my annual physical, my doctor and I had a discussion about my blood pressure. It had been borderline high the past few visits, and we agreed to have me start on a beta-blocker to bring it back to normal. He explained that in the past that a BP reading at my level would have been monitored for further increases. Since today’s drugs were virtually side–effect free and because of the long term benefits to the body, it made sense to get my blood pressure in the normal range as soon as possible. So, I started taking the drug, and within a week, my blood pressure was normal. Cured?... Or at least fixed? Not quite.

Within 3 months, I started getting headaches. They were mild at first, but they got much worse within a few months. Although my symptoms were not classic migraines (no noise or light sensitivity, etc.), the severity and location convinced my doctor that I was suffering from migraines. To treat this, I started taking an assortment of the triptan medications commonly prescribed for patients suffering from this type of headache. Eventually, this stopped working altogether, so I was referred to a neurologist who specialized in headaches. He too was convinced that I was getting migraines and told me that the beta–blocker that I was taking for blood pressure was also used to treat people with migraines. As a result, he increased the dosage. This worked for a while too, but the headaches came back in a month or so. I returned to see him again. He increased the dosage one more time, but the headaches returned as before. I was starting to miss work, and anxiety was building within me as I was trying to figure out how I was going to cope with daily headaches and with no answers from my physicians!

I was desperate and decided to figure out what I could do on my own. While searching online, I happened upon Dr. Fuhrman’s website. I read everything that I could find about headaches on his site. I bought and read both of his books, and I followed the headache diet diligently with no cheating. At the same time I stopped all of my medications. Just as Dr. Fuhrman had stated, "it will get worse before it will get better." I had four days of mind numbing headaches. It was hard. I took hot showers, used ice packs, and read things in the Member Center on the ETL site for inspiration. No matter what, I wasn’t giving up and wasn’t giving in to the temptation to take something that I knew would only delay my eventual relief.

After the headaches broke, I was so relieved. It worked just as Dr. Fuhrman promised, and I knew I was on my way to better health and a better life that was free of headaches. Eight months since I’ve started ETL, I no longer take the beta–blockers for my blood pressure, because it is now normal. I do not need the triptan medication for headache rescue, for I have not had a headache since my conversion experience above. Also, I do not take the two allergy medications I was prescribed either.

Now, I am living a life free of the need for any drugs. I lost 30 lbs. and have the energy to exercise every day. I eat to live now instead of living to eat. My relationship with food is much different, and my hunger is different than it used to be too. I no longer crave the bad foods. In fact, I’m not really even interested in them. Most importantly, I learned a lot about medical treatment in this country, and how easy it was that an Internist and a headache specialist could not discover the linkage between the beta–blocker that I was taking and how it was hurting and not helping me as they intended. I have whole new respect for the power of the drugs that are prescribed for us, even when they are thought of as virtually side–effect free.

When they say you are what you eat, they couldn’t be more right. I learned that lesson the hard way, but I am glad to tell you about it.

Dr. Fuhrman’s Weighs in on Protein Drinks and Whey Protein.

Summer is here, that time of year when everyone becomes more focused on pumping up their bodies in preparation for shorts, bathing suits, and the beach. Many people ask my opinion after their personal trainers advise them to consume more protein by using protein drinks with whey protein.

Our entire society is on a protein binge, brainwashed with misinformation that we have been hearing since childhood. The average American consumes about fifty percent more protein than the recommended daily amount.

It is true that resistance training and endurance workouts can break down muscle protein and increase our need for protein to fuel repair and growth. Although, athletes have a greater protein requirement than sedentary individuals, it can be easily obtained through the diet. And of course my recommended source of protein is from an assortment of vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans and whole grains. Not only will they supply you with adequate protein but they offer the added benefit of antioxidant protection.

Exercise not extra protein builds strength, denser bones, and bigger muscles. When you artificially stimulate growth through overfeeding and excessive animal product consumption, you may achieve a heightened body mass index unobtainable by other means, but you will add fat to your body as well. Not convinced yet – let me remind you that additional body mass index- even if it is mostly muscle – is a strong indicator of premature death.

So, can you guess where I stand on protein supplementation and whey protein? In short, the use of protein supplements is not merely a waste of money, it is unhealthy. Studies have not supported claims that whey protein increases growth hormone or provides any of the other touted benefits.  In fact increased whey protein added to the diets of rats increased tumors and cancers.

Isolated soy protein is also not a healthful supplement. We should not attempt to isolate protein to consume it. If you want to increase your protein intake use a whole food such as sunflower seeds or pignolis.
