Dr. Fuhrman's Tip of the Month

A multi a day . . . does not keep the doctor away, unless it goes hand in hand with a healthful diet and does not contain toxic amounts of certain nutrients!

I generally recommend that all people take a high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement to assure most favorable levels of vitamin D, B12, zinc, iodine and selenium, to name a few. Even if your diet is ideal, some people require more of certain nutrients than others. For example, it is not uncommon for some people to need extra vitamin D, or extra B12, even when their diets contain typical amounts of these vitamins.

In designing my multi, Gentle Care, I took, and continue to take, into consideration the latest research on the impacts of vitamin and mineral supplementation. It is just as important to avoid overdoing certain nutrients as it is to ensure getting enough. There are documented risks associated with taking too much vitamin A, isolated beta-carotene, B6and iron beyond what we get in our diet, yet most supplements contain them.

For example, researchers found, in two separate cancer prevention trials, that beta-carotene actually increased lung cancer incidence and mortality in smokers and male asbestos workers (J. Natl. Cancer Inst. 1996;88:1550-9; N. Engl. J. Med. 1994;330:1029-35). Ingesting vitamin A or beta-carotene in isolation may interfere with the absorption of other crucially important carotenoids, such as lutein and lycopene, thus potentially increasing cancer risk. (For more details see my Healthy Times Newsletter No. 3, November 2002). For these reasons, I created my own multi that I could feel comfortable recommending to my patients - eliminating vitamin A, beta-carotene and iron.

Science moves much faster than most companies can keep pace with, but I strive to keep my products as current as possible. Most recently, I have modified my multivitamin formula to increase the level of B12 and reduce the amount of B6 based on recent studies which revealed that higher levels of B6 have been linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and cancer particularly when combined with folic acid.1

Food for Thought

Enjoy the bountiful harvest of fresh summer produce! You can reduce your pesticide exposure by 90% by avoiding the top 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables when possible or only eating them when organic.

Bell peppers
Imported grapes
Red raspberries

Strawberries are a sweet, energizing treat and an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids, however, they are one of the most heavily pesticide treated crops. In addition, most growers spray strawberries again with fungicide before shipping. When eating fresh strawberries be sure they are organically grown, frozen strawberries are not as heavily contaminated, are not sprayed with fungicides and therefore it is not essential that they are organic.

To read more about pesticide contamination of foods, see Healthy Times Newsletter, Issue No. 14, July 2004.

Recipe of the Month

Banana Flag Cake

Need a grand finale for your Eat to Live Patriotic Picnic? This Banana Flag Cake is fun to make and you can be sure that everyone will rave about it. Made without white flour, refined sugar, milk or eggs....it's dynamite!

I lost half of my weight and recovered my health!

I was overweight since childhood, with a history of heaviness, heart disease and diabetes on both sides of my family. Through the years, I've tried many reducing diets with only minimal and never lasting success. I reached a top weight of 263 pounds on a 5' 4' frame and had resigned myself to forever being a plus-sized woman. Today, I am half the size and more healthy than I have ever been in my life and have Dr. Fuhrman to thank.

Tragically at age 56, I suffered a stroke. After almost a month in the hospital and rehab center, I returned home diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arteries about 65% blocked, a low thyroid and was prescribed medications which I was expected to take for life. Over time things only got worse, and I ended up with 2 stents for a 95% blockage and more prescriptions. The medications came with their fair share of side effects. My husband searched the Internet for alternative treatments and found Dr. Fuhrman, who claimed dramatic results through dietary changes. Because I was wheelchair bound, my husband learned to cook and prepare meals the Eat to Live way for both of us.

I became a patient of Dr. Fuhrman's, via phone consultations, and did well following the Eat to Live plan. I lost pounds quickly, and my lab tests improved. About a year and a half after my first consult, I am off all diabetic and heart medications. I have had no further heart problems, and my diabetes is gone. My total cholesterol dropped from 219 to 130, and my triglycerides are down from 174 to 73. My LDL cholesterol has lowered from 149 to 70. My current weight is around 130, slightly less than half my maximum. I have gone from a plus size 24W/26W to a misses 8/10.

Less measurable but more important benefits are that I no longer snore, and my energy and stamina have increased. I owe all these positive changes to Dr. Fuhrman's EAT TO LIVE program, thank you!

Health and Science Facts
Sun Damage Facts
  • Daily exposure to the sun over a lifetime is a major cause of skin damage, including wrinkling and skin cancer.
  • Any tan indicates skin damage. The deeper the color of the tan the more extensive the skin damage.
  • Sunscreens with high SPF numbers may provide less than full protection, because SPF addresses only the UVB spectrum.
  • Sunlight coming through a window can damage your skin.
  • Every year, more than 1,000,000 people in the United States get skin cancer. It is the most common form of cancer, with rates growing three to five percent annually. Left untreated, skin cancer may be life threatening.
  • The death rate from melanoma in the U.S. has increased by about 4% a year since 1973, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Melanoma represents only about 47,000 of the 1.8 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year, but according to the American Cancer Society it will cause 79% of skin cancer deaths.
The best solution is prevention.

There are two different types of UV rays in sunlight: UVB light causes surface sunburn, while UVA light penetrates and causes deeper connective tissue damage -- even when the skin surface feels cool. UVA light is the culprit for premature aging and cellular damage.

Sunscreen ingredients are just starting to catch up with the discovery of how bad UVA rays are, and unless the product contains avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789), titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide, (or Mexoryl SX or Tinosorb outside the U.S.), you're not protected from UVA. In addition, most children's sunscreens are no different than those for adults, except for added fragrance that can actually irritate kids' more-sensitive skin. When looking for a children's sunscreen, choose one that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, and avoid avobenzone which is more irritating to children's skin.

I recommend Total Block C.O.T.Z SPF 58 Sunscreen to my patients and members for safe and effective protection from the sun.
