To Feed a Cold and Starve a Fever?

In acute illnesses, such as colds and flu, the symptoms – such as fever and cough – are the best remedies for the virus. The fever encourages the brain to secrete interferon, which then further activates white blood cells to fight the virus. The cough aids in expelling the mucus and preventing it from settling within the lung. The body has the innate intelligence and power to heal itself from within, if not hampered. We assist this renewal by thorough rest, which includes not eating much or not eating at all.

We naturally lose our appetite when we are ill. When ill with a typical viral syndrome, it is best to rest, drink water, avoid cooked food, and only consume fresh fruit and raw vegetables if hungry. Fasting when ill speeds recovery, reduces mucus production, and activates the immune system’s defenses to rapidly and dramatically eliminate the viral load.

Food for Thought
The most effective artillery we have to protect ourselves against the potential damaging effects of influenza and other infectious disease is nutritional excellence. Micronutrients – meaning vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals – fuel various defense mechanisms within our bodies. It also has been demonstrated that when diets are low in consumption of green and yellow vegetables (which are rich in carotenoids and other phytochemicals), viral illnesses take a more serious form. Low nutrient intake enables microbes (viruses and bacteria) to spread easily and develop into dangerously stronger forms. The fact that this is happening should be of no surprise since ubiquitous consumption of fake foods such as white bread, pasta, oil, and sugar has become the norm. We make matters even worse by combining misuse and overuse of antibiotics with our poor nutritional habits.

A powerful but virtually ignored public health measure that can be taken to protect modern society from the flu and other infectious illnesses is the implementation of a program of nutritional education. You can avoid the flu, and if you do get it, you can make sure that it is a mild illness for you and your family. The key is excellent nutrition. To enhance health and well being, we need to learn how to choose foods that deliver maximum nutrient density per serving. A diet based on nutrient rich plant foods is our best defense against most diseases of abundance like obesity, cancer, heart disease and diabetes in addition to common colds and the flu. Vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a fascinating array of phytochemicals all add up to determine the nutrient density of a food item.

Recipe of the Month

We thought that January would be a good month to feature crock pot recipes so that you could put your new crock pot to good use. Those of you who have "old" and forgotten crock pots can get them out & dust them off to try these delicious recipes. We, at DrFuhrman online, have been working hard to perfect these recipes so we hope that you’ll try them and we are sure you’ll enjoy them!

Crock pot cooking is an easier way of cooking because all you usually have to do is add all of the ingredients at the same time, therefore eliminating many steps required in some recipes. At any time of year, a slow cooker can make life a little more convenient because, by planning ahead, you save time later. What a treat to wake up in the morning to the smell of a nutritious quinoa breakfast or to come home from work to the aroma of a Eat To Live soup or stew!
