Dr. Fuhrman's Tip(s) of the Month
When to See a Doctor
If you develop the flu, stay home, sip water all day (as opposed to drinking lots at one time), and eat as little as possible. Fever is a protective effort by the body to increase its defenses against viral replication. The flu itself is not dangerous, however, in rare instances bacterial pneumonia could occur, and would necessitate treatment. Symptoms suggesting that medical consultation is necessary are: a sudden worsening of the overall condition; unusually rapid breathing; breathing with grunting or wheezing sounds; labored breathing that makes a child's rib muscles retract; abdominal pain (more common in children); changes in behavior or mental status, such as disorientation or not being alert; persistent diarrhea or vomiting in children unable to drink sufficient fluids; and persistent fever above 103 degrees for three days.

When to Use Antibiotics
Antibiotics are the appropriate treatment for severe bacterial infections. These infections include cellulitis, Lyme disease, pneumonia, joint infections, cat bites, meningitis, and bronchitis in a long-term smoker. Bronchitis in a non-smoker is usually just a bad cold. Almost every viral syndrome involves the bronchial tree and sinuses. The presence of yellow, brown, or green mucus does not indicate the need for an antibiotic. Likewise, sinusitis is not an appropriate diagnosis for the routine use of an antibiotic. Antibiotics should be reserved for the more serious sinus infections that show evidence of persistent symptoms lasting more than a week, such as continual fever and headache that accompanies facial pain and facial tenderness.

As a result of accumulating evidence documenting the dangers of antibiotics and their overuse, new guidelines for treating ear infections in children were just released from a joint effort of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics. These guidelines represent a major shift in policy and thinking by physician leadership. The guidelines encourage doctors to initially manage the pain and not prescribe antibiotics for children who present with ear infections and to defer antibiotic use for the sicker children who are not improving two or three days later. You can read more about this in my book, Disease-Proof Your Child.

Food for Thought
When you have a child, you have the unique opportunity to mold a developing person. One of your greatest gifts to them can be a disease resistant body created from excellent food choices beginning at youth. Ear infections, strep throats, allergies, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADD or ADHD), and even autoimmune diseases can be prevented by sound nutritional practices early in life. Common childhood illnesses are not only avoidable, but they're more effectively managed by incorporating nutritional excellence into one's diet. This is far superior to the dependence on drugs to which we are accustomed. No parent would disagree that our children deserve only the best.

If you are a parent, you may want to follow this course of action:
  • Read, or listen to, my book, Disease-Proof Your Child, as a source of sound nutritional information.
  • Submit your questions in the 'Ask The Doctor' forum on the website.
  • Interact with other members in our online support system.
  • Try our children's supplements: Dr. Fuhrman's Pixie-Vites and DHA Purity.
Dr. Fuhrman's Pixie-Vites A multi-vitamin in a stick with a great berry taste, without artificial sweeteners, that your children will love! These are also great for adults who don't like to swallow pills.

Dr. Fuhrman's DHA Purity is a natural vegetarian source of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid and one of the crucial building blocks of human brain tissue. This DHA product is an extremely high caliber microalgae and is manufactured to optimize purity and freshness. The bottle comes with a graduated dropper for your convenience. With a light, pleasant citrus flavor just a few drops on your tongue or mixed with food or drink supplies your daily dose. Essential for all ages!

DHA and Your Brain
Early in life DHA is supplied via the placenta and from breast milk. Adequate DHA is particularly important for pregnant and nursing women. Studies have shown improved intelligence scores of breast fed children whose mothers took DHA supplements during pregnancy and nursing.1 The DHA levels in the breast milk from women in the United States are among the lowest in the world. DHA deficiencies starting in childhood can contribute to multiple problems later in life, such as hyperactivity and allergies. In fact, dyslexia and ADHD have been linked to the low DHA intake common in the United States.2 An adequate level of DHA has been found to improve behavior and symptoms of ADHD.3,4

Recipe of the Month

In honor of President's Day, we thought we'd feature some of President Washington and President Lincoln's favorite foods, the Eat to Live style. A couple of President Washington's favorite foods were fish and ice cream, so we've come up with a delicious Wild Salmon Chowder and Creamy Banana Fig Ice Cream, featuring Dr. Fuhrman's Black Fig Vinegar. President Lincoln's favorite foods were cheese and fruit salad, so we've created a delicious sweet cheese that can be eaten alone or used as a topping or base for the Winter Warm Fruit Salad and other fruit dishes. The Easy Vegetable Pizza is lightly covered with soy cheese and will be a hit!

Fruit salads are enjoyed so much in the summer, but should not be forgotten about the rest of the year. Fruit is loaded with nutrients so make sure you keep enjoying the many varieties of fruit available year round. The Winter Warm Fruit Salad will wet your appetite to experiment with different combinations of fruit, warmed up for a pleasing taste experience during the cold winter months.

My story: I started having skin rashes and joint pain as a teenager more than 40 years ago. Back then, in the 1960's, I don't think doctors knew much about autoimmune conditions (perhaps not even now). I was put on various drugs, starting with steroids, which blew me up like a beached whale, antihistamines, etc. I was on meds for 18 years and at various times made the rounds among allergists, dermatologists, hematologists, rheumatologists, and endocrinologists.

In my mid-thirties, totally unrelated to my condition, I decided to get healthy before turning 40. When I eliminated all junk food and anything with artificial ingredients, eventually becoming a vegetarian, I was able to get by without the drugs and remained symptom-free for over a decade. Then I lapsed back into my old SAD ways, living a frenetic, restaurant hopping, stressed out life in Manhattan. By the time I turned 50 in 1999 (now living in NC), I was covered from my scalp to the soles of my feet with psoriasis and tested positive for other autoimmune diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto's and Sjogren's.

I called Dr. Fuhrman whose book, Fasting and Eating for Health, had a chapter devoted to autoimmune conditions. I've followed his program since 2001 with much success. (See story in Healthy Times Newsletter, Issue #1, Sept. 2002) My skin flared up again in 2004 and 2006, both times after straying from his recommendations, on top of a 2006 vacation 'attack' of about 30 insect bites over 2 days (I think the bodily stress and venom of it may have triggered the immune response).

Anyway, this is the first time that I took before and after photographs. I've learned my lesson. If you want to live drug-free, this is the program that works. I may never be cured, but I can manage my disease(s) provided I follow Dr. Fuhrman's advice. The body has incredible healing powers if given the proper nutrients and care. The other benefits gained are too numerous to mention, including weight loss and breezing through menopause. I'm now 58 years young.

Here are my BEFORE & AFTER photos from following the autoimmune protocol as described in the November 2004 issue of the Healthy Times newsletter.
