Dr. Fuhrman's Tip of the Month

Beat the Winter Blues: Natural Cures for Depression

Recent advances in non-pharmacologic treatments for depression can help people feel better-and even assist them in making a total recovery-without dependence on medications. Researchers in this field have been surprised to find that natural therapies can have very high success rates, rivaling those of drugs. Here are a few . . .

  • Nutrition & Mood Disorders - Nutritional excellence is important for brain function. Without adequate micronutrient intake in our diet, our internal environment becomes toxic. Studies linked these toxins to depression, heart disease, asthma, Alzheimer's and more.
  • Lighting the Way to Wellness - Light therapy is an effective treatment for Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia, Bipolar Depression, Seasonal Depressive Disorder, PMS, Insomnia, ADHD, ADD and Bulimia Nervosa.
  • Omega-3 Fat for Mood Disorder Prevention - Depression is related to low levels of long chain omega-3 fats in the brain. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid and one of the crucial building blocks of human brain tissue. Deficiencies of DHA may increase vulnerability to depression.

Food for Thought

Keeping Off the Extra Holiday Pounds

Stave off the extra holiday pounds this year by following this tip: Never go to a party or event on an empty stomach. Here's how:

  • Pre-fill on high-nutrient, low calorie foods.
  • Eat a large salad with assorted raw vegetables or a hearty bowl of vegetable soup before going out.

Being healthy is about being in control. You must control your hunger, and the more low-calorie, high-volume foods you consume, the less high-calorie food you will be able to eat. When you increase super healthy foods in your diet, you feel less temptation, and gain control over your food cravings and appetite.

Success Stories
The Eat to Live philosophy helped Laurie lose 52 pounds and battle depression!

"For the past ten years, I have taken various antidepressant drugs to overcome the terrible periods of depression and manic behavior I have experienced my whole adult life. In August, 2006, I weighed 240 lbs. (I am 5'6" tall). I experienced shortness of breathe simply walking the dog. I was upset by my weight and felt ill most of the time.

Our pharmacist introduced my family to Eat To Live. So far, I have lost 52 lbs. I feel better both physically and mentally then I have in a long time. I am finally getting my weight under control. My psychiatrist is pleased that my medications are finally working appropriately.

My whole family has now adopted the Eat to Live approach. We all feel and look better. We are able to handle the normal difficulties of life more easily.

Thanks so much for your book and philosophy of life."
