Charlene's Story

Charlene lost 81 pounds and her ulcerative colitis went into remission  

When I was 16 years old I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and put on steroids. The medication caused me to gain a lot of weight, plus, at that age, I didn’t care what I ate.  Eventually, I ballooned up to 370 pounds. Then, through portion control and exercise, I got down to 250 pounds, but remained stuck at that weight. I tried everything to lose more weight, going from high carbs, low carbs, no carbs, and calorie counting.  My weight went up and down as I bounced from one diet to another.  Needless to say, I was frustrated and had low self-esteem.  I didn’t have much of a life.  I avoided going out because I didn’t want people to look at me and think that I was a fat disgusting-to-look-at woman.

Then, searching the internet, I found a health site and was introduced to Dr. Fuhrman’s book Eat To Live and G-BOMBS.  After reading the book, I was hooked. I no longer counted calories or portions. I ate lots of vegetables, and as I did, my energy skyrocketed and the pounds came off, and my ulcerative colitis went into remission.

But then I lost my dad to cancer, and my life spun out of control. Due to emotional pain, I went back to eating the SAD diet and put on weight again.   After some time, I again committed to the Nutritarian program and am now down to 165 pounds. I went from a BMI of 61 to 27; my cholesterol dropped from 300 to 125; and my blood pressure went from 145/95 to 117/70.

Today, at the age of 42, by eating healthy and weighing less, I have the energy to live life to the fullest.  I’m earning my nutrition certification so that I will be able to help others. I can’t thank Dr. Fuhrman enough for my new life.

To others who want to succeed on the Nutritarian program, I encourage them to be organized and always have food prepared in advance so that healthy options are always available.   And believe in yourself. Getting healthy is within you. Nothing is impossible.

Recently, a friend asked me if I resent the way I eat. Absolutely not. Living the Nutritarian lifestyle has given me my life back. I now eat to live instead of live to eat. How could I possibly resent a way of eating that tastes delicious and has changed my life so much.  I love following the Nutritarian lifestyle. I am never going back to the SAD.
