Dorothy
Dear Dr. Fuhrman,
My name is Dorothy and I started ETL in November 2003. My sister Julia, who is also a successful member, got me inspired to give ETL a try. When I actually saw Julia come back to life, so to speak, I wanted for myself what she had found through Eat to Live.
I started at 254 pounds, which can be documented through my doctor’s charts. I had no idea what I was doing only that I could eat veggies, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds!
The early days were very hard for me. I had to find stores and health stores that could supply me with the foods I now needed to buy. Now it’s a snap. I know exactly where to go to get what I need and more stores including Wal-Mart are selling organic produce and organic frozen fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices.
I now weigh 179 pounds and I am 5 feet 5 ½ inches tall. I have just turned 62 years-old. I still have about 40 pounds to lose. I have had many slips along the way and regained some of my weight back but have gotten back on track and have lost it.
When I eat sad I don't feel well and gain weight. I do so much prefer ETL. There is a great variety of recipes and foods to eat. I still have a long way to go with my exercise and hope I can accomplish that soon. I am off Prozac, Paxil, and Diovan for blood pressure. It's a lifestyle change for me now and not a diet. Even though I tend to get off track from time to time, the weight comes back to remind me that it's time to get back to my healthy lifestyle. Diets do not work but lifestyle changes do!
After reading this I don't know if you would call this a success story or a daily struggle against bad habits and a little whining about not wanting to exercise but this is basically my story! But the results so far is that I have lost 75 pounds, got off medications, feel half my age and I'm grateful to Dr. Fuhrman and all his dedication, this website, the wonderful members and all the knowledge, information and help we get here, and lastly, to my sister Julia, who has helped me every step of the way!
This is truly an amazing success story that will only get better each day. My dog Boots weighs 69 pounds and I can't pick her up and put her in the tub for a bath. So I can't imagine how I ever carried all that weight day in and day out on my body. Now I love to shop. I can wear a misses size 16 and no longer have to buy size 24 jeans or 4x shirts.
My family supports what I am doing, but I can't get them to change to this lifestyle. So I still have to cook sad meals for them. At one point where I was proud to make them delicious comfort sad food. I feel guilty now when I serve it to them. This is the part that is bittersweet!
