Since my 39 pound weight loss co-workers have asked me how I did it. I tell them if they really want to lose weight and keep it off to read Eat To Live. Some are changing and eating healthier. I have much more energy, a better outlook on my life and the direction of my health now than I ever had. My husband John and I decided to change our life in December 2010. We both had been eating the Standard American Diet and felt and looked bad. I ate fried foods, meat, bread, ice cream, cakes, cookies, and not enough fruit and vegetables, the whole SAD story.
Our family histories have basically the same diseases on both sides; heart, cancer, and diabetes. The one thing both of us have burned into our memory is what my mother-in-law said when she found out she had cancer, “It must be something in water or the food we are eating." After both of us read Dr. Fuhrman books Eat For Health and Eat To Live we realized how right she was. We knew we had to change our diet or we would both get one or all of the above diseases. We decided to go all the way and change our diet cold turkey on December 2, 2010. Everyone at work asked me why I started before Christmas, why didn’t I wait and start the diet after the New Year. I said this is a lifestyle change not just a diet. There is so much bad food in our office starting Thanksgiving and through January, I wanted to prove to myself that I could make it through the holidays and not eat the bad stuff.
The first week was rough, going through the detox and getting over the cravings for coffee and sugar. After that it was just getting into the habit of eating better. It is not as hard as we thought it would be. We bought a Vitamix for Christmas and started making Green Smoothies for breakfast, and frozen desserts, Chocolate Banana Fluff, Yum! After a month we both lost between fifteen and twenty pounds. I started at 255 pounds and now March 31st I am 216 pounds and still losing. We both joined a gym and workout at least three to four times a week doing cardio and weights. I also walk our two dogs at least twenty minutes every day, rain, sleet or snow.
