Mark's Story

After losing 21 pounds and coming off blood pressure medication, Mark stopped feeling like "an old fat guy," instead enjoys feeling like his younger athletic self

I was getting sedentary because of aches and pains and fatigue. I had high blood pressure and my feet hurt. I got sleepy after lunch and had to drink a quart of coffee to get anything done in the afternoon.

I saw Eat to Live in a bookstore, read it and later listened to the audiobook of The End of Dieting which made me realize the Nutritarian way leads to multiple good health outcomes, not just weight loss. I wanted to reduce my risk of heart disease and cancer as well as be better looking and more athletic.

Previously I had tried low-carb diets in various versions--Atkins, Protein Power, Paleo. I just could not stay on them long term and worry about the heart and cancer consequences of eating all that meat and fat.

My biggest challenge in making the transition to a Nutritarian diet was eating all the salads. I like them, but am not much of cook and don't like preparation, no matter how brief. Easier for me is eating raw fruits and whole grain cereals, as they are ready to eat.

Now I lost 21 pounds and have so much more energy, feel more confident. I stopped taking Nadolol because my blood pressure is okay without it and I dislike the side effects. Also, my headaches are reduced in frequency and severity.

I am able to do twenty-five minutes of high intensity Interval training each day on the elliptical trainer and I can now run two miles at a fast clip. I could not have approached this before making this progress. I am much more alert and am doing better at my work. I need less sleep and feel energetic.

Living the Nutritarian lifestyle I feel like an athlete, which is something I had lost and is now back. I had been feeling like a fat old guy. Now I relish the feeling of knowing that I can run and outdo guys younger than myself. It changes my whole sense of who I am and how I am in the world.

To those beginning a Nutritarian lifestyle I advise commit to a week. The first week is the toughest. Bear down and do it.  When you see the quick results, you will be motivated to keep going and going.

Results may vary.
